Do I need to buy ATV insurance?
Before we go on, we want to be clear that we recommend ATV insurance regardless of where you live or what it’s used for. Imagine an accident that hurts you or someone else or damages property. How would you pay for it? Or what if you get hurt by someone else who doesn’t carry insurance? Having your own insurance is the best (and only) option in our eyes.
And let’s not forget about liability for your passengers. Imagine not having coverage for them?
Now back to whether you need to buy ATV insurance:
Yes, if you have a loan then you will be required to carry liability, collision, and comprehensive.
Regarding state laws, there is little consistency among our 50 states, and requirements change, but there are a few states that require liability insurance and a few that don’t.
Hawaii, Massachusetts and West Virginia require liability insurance. There are circumstances within those requirements that change the requirements.
Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, and Arizona do not require liability insurance. But again, certain situations may require you to carry it.
The remaining states have various insurance laws based on age, where the ATV is driven, and number of CCs of your motor.
It’s so important to work with a solid agent to ensure you are insured. We happen to know several.
How much is ATV insurance?
On average, a liability only policy will cost $100-$200 per year. Make it a full-coverage policy by adding comp and collision, and the average will increase to $400-$500 per year.
Keep in mind that the type of ATV, its value, your age, location, usage, driving record, limits and deductibles will affect rates.
Good to know: Insuremart works with over 100 insurance carriers. Nothing gives you an advantage when buying ATV insurance — or any insurance — like a great agent and more options. Talk to our agents.
What does ATV insurance cover?
Liability – When you cause an accident, liability insurance reimburses victims for costs related to bodily injury and property damage. Legal fees are also covered.
- Bodily Injury Limits: Ranges will be $15,000 to $50,000 per person or $30,000 to $100,000 total per accident. Ask one of our agents about increasing these limits. The cost will be minimal in comparison to value. It’s important to note that your passengers are not included here. Keep reading for more info.
- Property damage Limits: $10,000-$50,000 are common. The lower end is per property damaged, and the $50,000 would be the total of all properties damaged.
Collision – Optional unless you have a loan. Covers damage to your ATV regardless of who is at fault. You can also add coverage for possessions and equipment add-ons.
Comprehensive – Coverage for damage to your ATV other than from an accident. Theft is the most common, but severe weather and vandalism are also covered.
Important: Uninsured/Underinsured Coverage – This will cover you when involved in an accident caused by someone who is uninsured or uninsured. Some insurance companies include this with full coverage, but it’s worth making sure because plenty of people don’t carry insurance.
Does ATV insurance include coverage for passengers?
Passenger Liability – Policies always include liability coverage for others, but may exclude passenger liability. PIP, or Personal Liability Protection (medical coverage), is another potential option that may cover passengers and is not typically included in base policies. Again, here’s where a quality agent comes in.
