How much does motorcycle insurance cost?

On average, a liability only policy will cost $175 per year. Make it a full coverage policy by adding comp and collision, and the average will increase to $400.

You could pay as little as $125 per year or as much as $1,500+. There are lots of factors.

What’s included in a typical motorcycle insurance policy? What about liability limits?

Liability – liability is required in all states. When you are in an at-fault accident, liability covers costs incurred by those you injured or whose property you damaged. Legal fees are also included.

  • Bodily Injury Limits: Some states allow minimum coverage of $30,000 per person and up to $60,000 per accident. We suggest increasing that to auto coverage levels of $100,000-$300,000 if it makes sense for your situation.
  • Property damage Limits: $25,000 is allowed in some states but consider increasing if possible because it doesn’t take much damage to ring up a $25,000 bill.

Collision – Optional unless you have a loan. Covers damage to your most prized possession motorcycle when you are involved in an at-fault accident.

Comprehensive – Coverage for damage to your motorcycle other than from an accident. Theft, severe weather, and vandalism are common.

Does motorcycle insurance cover passengers?

Passenger Liability – Policies always include liability coverage for others, but often exclude passenger liability. PIP, or Personal Liability Protection (medical coverage), is another potential option that may cover passengers, and is typically not included by default.
