What does renter’s insurance cover?

Personal Property: Covers your furniture, clothes, devices, and other belongings from loss due to theft, fire, vandalism, and other covered perils. Perils can very by provider. Coverage includes damage to your personal property even when outside of your apartment. Your landlord’s insurance may not cover your personal property, so you would not be covered unless you carry insurance. Talk to our agents about your options.

Liability Coverage: Covers costs associated with bodily injury to someone while inside your rental unit, and damage to someone else’s property even if it was not inside your apartment. It also covers legal fees and medical expenses, which can add up quickly.

Additional Living Expenses (ALE): Covers temporary living costs like hotel rooms and eating out if your apartment becomes uninhabitable after a covered peril like fire.

How much is renter’s insurance? What limits and deductibles should I expect or consider?

Now for the good news – Renters insurance is cheap for what you get. Expect to pay $20-$30 per month for decent coverage, and potentially more if you happen to own expensive items. If that’s the case, make sure to document those items and provide information to your Insuremart agent.

Good to know: Insuremart works with over 100 insurance carriers. Nothing gives you an advantage when buying Tenant insurance — or any insurance — like a great agent and more options. Talk to our agents.

Deductibles – Deductibles will be $500 to $1,000, which is the amount you will pay if you file an accepted claim.

Liability Limits – Personal property coverage limits will range from $10,000 to $100,000. Liability will be $100,000 to $300,000 or more if desired. It will depend on your budget and insurance provider.

Important coverage information

Actual Cash Value (ACV) vs. Replacement Cost Value (RCV) – ACV will consider the age and condition of your personal property, which means you will be paid for the depreciated value. RCV will cover the cost to repair or replace your lost or damaged items with similar items at today’s value.

You will pay more for RCV, but it’s worth it over the alternative getting paid less than what it costs to replace your valuables.

Add-ons to consider

Our agents will offer add-ons to extend your coverage when it makes sense to do so. Plus, add-ons are typically affordable for the value they provide.

Scheduled personal property: This is for high value items. Make sure to disclose to your agent.

Pet damage: Pets can be destructive to floors and walls, and your liability increases, so make sure to consider that when talking with us.

Business property: For those who work from home.
